Back at work again

As I announced on Twitter over a month ago, I have left my job at Sugar Inc. In a nutshell, I was feeling bored, and unchallenged. But I liked the people there, and so leaving wasn't an easy decision to make. But I managed to snag a new opportunity that sounded interesting, and after 3 weeks of being a bum, I was back at work this week.

And where was I plying my skills for pay? Here is a hint:

Yes, that's right, I have joined Twitter, as a Release Engineer on their Build/Release team. And that last bit is pretty important — I've been doing the Operations/Sysadmin thing for the last several jobs, and I was really hungry for a change. So not only was Twitter willing to take me onboard, but they were also amenable to letting me shift gears to doing Build/Release, which is not something that I've every done as a full time job before (build/release was just one of my many duties as the Operations Lead at Sugar).

And so, if my goal was to make my work life more challenging, I believe that switching to Twitter has over-delivered. They are way into Ruby and Git, two technologies that I don't know a whole lot about. I did some reading about Ruby while on my vacation, and I'm making some decent progress picking that up. Git, on the other hand, is wild, and is going to seriously require me to bend my brain into new shapes.

What is it like at Twitter? It's hard to describe. I don't think I'm revealing any non-public information in saying that the perks are pretty great. Having lunch and breakfast, in-office, in particular is something that I've really been enjoying. It's a great way to be social with other folks, and the food is really good to boot. But other than that, there seems to be a lot going on at Twitter. It's been a while since I've been at such a large company, and there is a certain energy to the place, that I have found to be pretty amazing so far.

So, while I did quite enjoy being unemployed (I was surprisingly busy!), I'm glad to be working again, with so many new challenges ahead of me. And Twitter is a service that I use every day, and that I have found tremendous value you in, so hopefully I won't screw things up. ;)
