No Steam for me

| Comments

So, Steam was finally released for Mac OS X this week, and to kick things off, Valve has made their hit game, "Portal", free until May 24th. Since I've never played Portal, and I'm curious to see how my 3+ year old Mac holds up, I installed Steam, created an account, and then downloaded portal (which I believe was over 5Gb). After the download finished, I tried to play, and was greeted with this:

No Steam for me
"Unsupported Video Card" error for Portal

What's great about this error message is that "Windows Version" is hard-coded into the driver details section, and Steam isn't able to properly determine the version number.

Further, in digging through the system requirements, I see that on Windows a DirectX 8.1 graphics card is required, while on Mac OS X, a NVIDIA GeForce 8 or higher card is required. I did some digging, and it seems that the NVIDIA 7300 GT in my iMac is DirectX 9.0c compliant (which is a superset of DirectX 8.1, as far as I know), so it's possible that Portal will run in Bootcamp on my Mac, but not in Mac OS X proper (but I haven't tested this yet).
