AMD, Intel x86 patent fight likely to be long and messy - Ars Technica: It's amazing to me that the x86 instruction set isn't an open language like C at this point. I like Intel and all, but this is one area of computing (the core instruction set) where one company exercises way too much control. Hopefully AMD and NVIDIA will be able to break this up a bit. Since it looks like x86 is ultimately going to end up everywhere, having this be an open standard is going to be really important.
